Agrefena 1000 BRM

Agrefena 1000 BRM The name Agrefena is derived from the Variant of the Russian ‘Agripena’ meaning ‘wild horse’. The route is introduced in 2022. Agrefena-1000 is designed for those who love wild challenges.

JBC to poonjeri

It was raining from overnight. Had to start from home in the rain and reached the start point to find no one else except me. After few minutes volunteers turned up and informed that out of registered 6 persons, 3 are not starting the ride. After collecting bib and having my bike check completed, three of us started the long ride from JBC, Velachery. Rode through the familiar mambakkam route and reached kelambakkam, tiruporur and finally the selfie point at poonjeri toll.

Condition of my cycle after full service the previous day

Poonjeri to chetpet

Had to face medium to heavy headwinds en route from Poonjeri to chengalpet, then rode in GST for few km and then took right towards uthiramerur. Had our breakfast. By then only two of us were there. Again rode through the familiar route towards chetpet via vandavasi. Had my lunch at chetpet in a small hotel. The owner was a young boy aged around 30 and he did not charge me for my lunch. Despite my requests to offer such things to the needy, he flatly refused. Also filled my water bottles before proceeding to jamunamaruthur.

Chetpet to jamunamarthur

On reaching polur observed that there is a small deviation from the usual route. I followed the map and once again reached the jawadhu hill climb base. In 2021 when I was at my best I climbed the five hairpin bends in 37 minutes and in the month of May in 2023 I could to the climb in 53 minutes. I assumed it was because I was carrying a 5 kg bag while doing the latter. However again this time it took 53 minutes to climb and I have no explanations. I have to accept the fact and strive to improve my fitness. There were two more climbs before reaching jamunamaruthur. I reached in 13 hours took a selfie and proceeded towards vaniyambadi.Jamunamaruthur to pernampetThree years back while doing my first 400 Km ride in my MTB, I went via this route along with cycling buddies. We had our dinner at Ambur biriyani. During this ride too I went to the same restaurant and had my dinner. It was the first long break during the ride and then readied myself for the night journey.

Halt at pernampet

I was crossing the tamilnadu- Andhra border at pernampet forest checkpost. The security personnel there stopped me from proceeding due to animal sounds. They told that there are bears and elephants in the forest and it is not wise to go alone into the forest in bicycle. I informed the volunteers and waited there for others to come. I slept for three hours and then at 4:00 am in the morning resumed the ride.  Pernampet to Angallu

The first fifteen km was climb through the forest and I was also alert. The climb was not much steep and I made it in an hour. Immiediately after the forest there were villages and people were available . There were tea shops opened and I had coffee and snacks and resumed my journey. Soon after that in the dark I left my cycle in a ditch during a fast decent and both the tubes burst in an instant. I replaced both the tubes and now I have to ride the next 665 km without spare tube. At 8:00 am In the morning had a breakfast at a road side hotel. Had a few soft drinks and then proceeded. It was rolling terrain and the roads were good enough. I was able to cover enough distance in the day. Finally reached Angallu SBI ATM, took a selfie and posted in the group.

Angallu to Ramapuram

It was becoming hot in the afternoon. At 2:00 pm stopped at a hotel for lunch. The people were enquiring with me about what I am doing, where from I came, why I am doing etc., They were looking at the gadgets in my cycle. Meanwhile I was having egg fried rice. I filled up my water bottles and then proceeded towards SBI ATM Ramapuram. Few small stretches of bad road and sudden drizzling cooled the atmosphere.

Ramapuram to kadappa

After reaching Ramapuram, stopped at a nearby shop and had juices and filled my water bottles and proceeded towards kadappa. There was a steep climb enroute and there were bad roads during descent. Heavy traffic was there during the climb and descent. However once the descent is over there was not much traffic. Volunteers from Madras Randonneurs were there. It was a surprise visit. We took photos and then I proceeded on the route.

Kadappa to   Mydukur

The roads were good and I had completed the second day ride all alone. There was a deviation at Mydukur. Hence took a break and had my dinner. The meals was good and I started through the village route. Riding through the village route at night with dogs barking and chasing, slowed me down. Some youngsters offered me juice and did not take money. Second such instance during the ride.

That gave me motivation to proceed further.I was riding thru the forests all alone and occasionally heavy vehicles like lorry or a tractor would pass. Then again it will be darkness. I only had two water bottles and I had to use them for entire night wisely.

Mydukur to cherlopalli

Once the forests were over I had to ride thru the village. It was even more scarier due to the dog chasing. It was pitch dark and dogs were not visible until I am near to them. The only lights were the ones from my bicycle. There were occasional street lights. By the time I reached the control point, the dogs were barking continuously while taking the selfie at Cherlopalli SBI ATM.

Cherlopalli to Musunur toll

From there the road went to kumbum forest range. Literally I was the only person in the forest and it was 1:00 am midnight. I gathered all my courage to ride through this stretch alone. Once the climb was over, then I knew I will complete this ride whatsoever. After the descent from kumbum forest range, I had to descent through village and once again faced dog chases. At one place around a dozen dogs surrounded me. Neither they had the courage to attack me nor I had the courage to move from that place. They kept barking for the next fifteen to twenty minutes and I sat down there waiting for them to stop. After twenty minutes I lost patience and started walking from there and the dogs only barked. They did not follow me. After 100 metres I climbed on to the saddle and faced the next dog group at 4:00 am in the morning. By this time I had no water to drink. I was not thirsty also. At early morning I was passing thru udayagiri caves. I had no time to wait and take photos. Had a coffee break at 6:00 am and breakfast at 8:00 am and then proceeded. Road construction work was going on and I had to ride through only gravel for twenty kilometres with no spare tube. I had puncture kit, but a tyre burst would destroy all my efforts. Luckily no such thing happened. Once I reached kavali I know I am very close to Chennai.

Musunuru toll to Tada

CCDReached Musunuru toll and again gained momentum after seeing the highway. Had lunch at a very good hotel (forgot the name). Very delicious lunch followed by mango milkshake. Started to ride after this lunch and had to face heavy head winds. All my hopes to complete early was lost. I could reach tada at 8:00 PM only. It took 8.5 hours for this 60 kms including lunch break.  CCD tada to JBCHad my dinner at tada. I was feeling sleepy. So took power naps every one hour and finally reached the finish point at 4:15 AM in the morning with more than 4 hours spare. Having successfully completed the ride went home and slept like a log.

Worn out tyres after the 1000 Km ride

(Black pant becomes white) Salt deposits in my leg after the ride

Some positives for me from the ride

  1. This was my longest solo ride
  2. I did not use the drop bag facility
  3. I did not change the shorts and jersey
  4. I did not have saddle soreness, not even slight pain.
  5. I took less brakes

I have to  find better solutions for the following

  1. Carrying additional powerbank
  2. Charging light, phone and wahoo during ride
  3. Cleaning the cycle during the ride if it is raining on the way

Jawadhu 400

Jawadhu 400 BRM

This is my final brevet for qualifying for PBP-2023 as I have completed 200, 300 and 600 brevets already. As I have already done this route twice in Feb-2021 and Aug-2021 I was super confident about the completion. However I was wearing cleats for a brevet for first time and also I carried 5 kg extra weight as practice for LRMs. Also this ride I have decided to ride solo to assess my performance post surgery and recovery.

Things I carried with me in bicycle

  1. Water bottles – 2 nos
  2. Spare tube – 2 nos
  3. Spare tyre – 1 no
  4. Front light – 2 nos
  5. Rear light – 2 nos
  6. Power bank 20000 MAh- 1 no
  7. Power bank 10000 MAh – 1 no
  8. Charging cables for lights, phone
  9. Fast and up electrolyte
  10. Wahoo roam bike compter
  11. Lube for chain
  12. Protein bars
  13. Puncture kit
  14. Chain link
  15. Spoke tool
  16. Portable air pump

What I wore

  1. Castelli cycling pants
  2. Btwin full pant over and above cycling pant
  3. Jersey
  4. Arm sleeves
  5. Bandana
  6. Helmet
  7. Safety vest
  8. Fizik cleats shoe
  9. Castelli socks

On the day of the ride I was greeted for send off by Venkat and MSK sir. Brevet cards were signed and bike check formalities completed. The ride was flagged off at 5:30 am in the morning. Starting from JBC and via medavakkam, kayar to ICICI bank ATM at Chengalpattu. This is a very familiar route to me and I did not need any navigation to reach the control point. Reached the control point around 7:45 am. Took a selfie and posted in the group. The sun was shining already.

The next control point is atleast 100 kilometres away. As usual my wahoo roam did not support during long rides. This is now happening in all the long rides. So I am thinking of investing in garmin 1030 or 1040. I have to take a turn towards uthiramerur from GST and proceed via vandavasi through chetpet and polur. I took a break for filling water and had a badam mix juice and a lemon juice. I reached 100 km in little over 4 hours and was proceeding without having breakfast. At 10:45, after reaching 118 km, I halted at a hotel and had 2 egg dosai with sambar, filled up my water bottles, carried a small bottle of limca.

Within a few minutes, I had my rear tyre flat. It was already very hot and I took shelter below the shade of a tree and replaced with new tube. I could not located the punctured spot neither in tube or tyre. Now I was very apprehensive of any foreign material sticking in the tyre and keep puncturing the tube, However nothing of that sort happened during the entire ride today.

After starting the ride again, realized that the roads were laid with new tarmac and there are no potholes anywhere to be seen unlike my last rides in 2021. So I thought in mmy mind about the return journey will be easy. It was one of the hottest day I have ever witnessed and with alternating headwinds and cross winds, the ride was tiresome. The average speed was around 20 kmph for next two hours. At 140 km volunteers were waiting and provided water and lunch. I reached SBI ATM at polur around 1:30 pm and completed the formalities.  The flyover which was under construction two years ago was still under construction.

The next is climbing jawadhu hills (five hair pin bends). I filled one of my water bottles with lemon juice. I usually take 37 minutes from the police check post to the fifth hair pin bend. But this time it took me 52 minutes and I was very tired while reaching the top which will not be the case usually. The 5 kg weight I carried additionally made the difference. I am now rethinking my strategy to carry this additional weight to PBP or not. However I will continue practicing with this additional weight to increase my leg power.

I reached the javadhu u turn point where MR volunteers were waiting , then took a selfie and then provided me with bananas and barfi. I took a break for brief 15 minutes and then proceeded downhill. The downhill was little scary as it was the first time with my cleats on. After descending I met Ramesh palani and parthiban on the way and then proceeded towards polur. the return journey was good however I took breaks every one hour to have coffee and to fill water bottles. I reached vandavasi at around 7:15 PM And then proceeded towards melmaruvathur and reached melmaruvathur  around 8:45 PM. I had my dinner at ambur biryani along with the chocolate milkshake I then filled up my water bottle then proceeded towards ECR. It was bit scary to ride alone some bikes were coming closely and observing. Fortunately there was no robbery. I felt safe once I reach reached ECR.

There were many shops opened even at late night and so had coffee every one hour. As I was fully hydrated did not refill the water bottles. Reached JBC at 3:15 am early in the morning.

Cycling in chennai – Ride to muttukadu

Today is fourth day after resuming ride and mutukadu is one of my favourite places to see the sunrise at beach. Today there were way too many birds in the lake. We could see many different species of water birds today morning. It was a splendid scene. Cormorants, pelicans, ibises and herons, and grebes were in maximum numbers.

The new beginning

I started cycling after six months of recovery and i am very happy about it. The first four months went really quick fast. The last two months lasted longer and longer. Initially i went for local grocery shop riding 1km up and 1 km down. Then went to the starting point for bird watching. Yesterday there was a cricket tournament among our cycling chapters.

We went as a group to cheer our cricket team players. I thought even i could not go fast eventually i can catch up with the riders at the ground. However to my surprise i was able to ride with the team despite a gap of six months. Day before yesterday Individual time trial within the chapter was conducted. I could not participate due to not starting. Now after yesterdays ride, again today went to celebrate the chapters second anniversary by cake cutting at besant nagar beach.

I have to give my road bike for service and hopefully by next week i will start riding my roadie. It is a new beginning for me after surgery. The distance i rode yesterday and today put together is 65 km. These small ride helped me gain confidence to go for further rides. Tomorrow we are going to ride uphill in pallavaram hills, one of my favourite spots in the city. I am looking up to it eagerly.

Bird walk at pallikaranai marsh land

Cycling group from WCCG Madipakkam and WCCG Navalur chapters jointly organised for a bird watching walk at pallikaranai Eco park situated between the pallikaranai marsh land towards kaiveli and behind the garbage dump yard. The original pallikaranai  marsh lands extended to several kilometres from Velachery to Sholinganallur during my childhood days.

The pallikaranai eco park opens at 6:30 am in the morning and closes at 6:30 in the evening. It is a very nice place for joggers and runners who can carry out the activities without disturbing the birds. The water inside the marsh lands had dried up within forty five days of monsoon activity in the region.

I am very happy that my ride activity resumed in this way. I also got to meet fellow birders who are also cyclists. I reached the park entrance 15 minutes before opening time and got to meet Mr Sudhakar, an avid bird photographer. We exchanged pleasantries and had a chat regarding birding in the area.

Once all the cyclists assembled we parked our cycles and locked together in a combined way to avoid theft. Few months ago during my UK visit I observed a lot of cycle parts and locks on the roadside. On enquiry it was informed that there is rampant cycle theft in UK. They remove the parts and take it with them leaving the lock along with the parts that cannot be removed. In that way India is far better. They steal the whole cycle or they leave it as it is. Things would be different If we have wings like our feathered friends. No vehicles, No pollution, No exploitation.

We were able to spot the following birds during the one hour walk.

  1. Swamphen
  2. Drongo
  3. Medium Egret
  4. Small egret
  5. Little greb
  6. Sandpiper
  7. Prinia
  8. Pond Heron
  9. Stilt
  10. Small king fisher
  11. Bulbul
  12. Kite
  13. Ibis
  14. Pitpit
  15. White throated kingfisher
  16. Cormorant
  17. Common Myna
  18. Coucal

All the pictures were taken by fellow bird watchers. I missed my camera very much. I just watched everyone taking pics of birds. I am eagerly waiting for the next bird watching activity with fellow cyclists.

Thanks for visiting my blog.
